Chapter Six

It was awkward.

No two ways about it. Agreeing to a date with Wes Callahan had been a huge mistake. Well, maybe not a huge mistake, because Con would get a good dinner out of it—and he couldn’t afford to turn down any free meals these days—but it was a mistake.

And he was pretty sure Callahan—Wes—felt the same way. Not that Con could tell, because Callahan—Wes—hadn’t said more than ten words to him after picking Con up promptly at seven.

“Steak okay? You like steak?” That was the extent of Wes’s conversation since they had climbed inside the Porsche.

Okay. Maybe that wasn’t fair. “Am I late?” Wes had said, when Con opened his front door. And then he had smiled. “You look nice.”

Wes looked nice too. In fact, maybe that was part of the problem. Wes was wearing a stylish camel sport coat and leather boots. He looked handsome and successful and like a complete stranger. A complete grown-up stranger who picked his dates up on time and at the door as though it was a real date. So maybe it was Con who had been a little stiff and a little self-conscious, and not his usual friendly, relaxed self at all.

“Thanks, Mr. Cal—”

Wes grinned at him. “Maybe you should call me Wes.”

Con’s face warmed and he felt more out of his depth than ever. Why had he agreed to this? It was such a bad idea.

“Wes,” he had repeated politely. And that was the last word he’d spoken. Not including “Sure,” when Wes had asked him if he liked steak. He just couldn’t seem to think of anything intelligent to say. Forget intelligent. He couldn’t think of anything at all.

Wes drove fast, but attentively. It would have helped if there had been some music playing or even the radio, but no. There was just the silence between Con and Wes, underlined by the efficient hum of the Porsche’s engine.

“How’s Lizzy?” Con asked out of desperation. There was no car seat or any indication that Wes had a child. This was really not the car of a family man. It was the car of a youngish millionaire. Eric would love this car. Eric would love to be a youngish millionaire. Minus all the work involved in getting there.

“She’s with her mother this weekend.”

“That’s right,” Con said. Wes had already explained tonight was the best night for going out because it was Lizzy’s weekend with her mom.

Wes threw him a quick smile. “How’s the job hunt going?”

“It’s going.”

After a pause, Wes said, “Was that the wrong question to ask?”

Con laughed shortly. “No. It’s pretty much all that’s going on with me right now.”

That did it for the dialog. Neither of them said a word for the rest of the drive.

It was valet parking at the restaurant, which turned out to be an expensive independent steakhouse, not Claim Jumpers or Outback or some place Con would have felt on his own turf. He was not normally socially awkward or particularly self-conscious, so what
